Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)

Insurance Requirement

The University of California requires that all students be covered by a health insurance plan. All  University of California Riverside  students are automatically enrolled in the university sponsored University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless they choose to submit an insurance waiver of comparable coverage.

What is Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?

UC SHIP is an affordable health insurance plan tailored to the health care needs of  University of California Riverside  students. It features year-round, worldwide coverage using the Anthem/Blue Cross network, which means students can receive convenient, high quality care when they are sick or injured without having to be concerned about cost or availability of the care they need. UC SHIP provides optimal coverage for services on campus and in the  University of California Riverside  community, and peace of mind for both parents and students. For more information please visit http://www.ucop.edu/ucship.

Considering waiving out of UC SHIP?

If you are planning on waiving out of UC SHIP, you should first make sure that the insurance plan you carry provides coverage at least within a 50 mile radius UC Riverside. Some insurance plans require that you visit their own network providers to receive care, and in some cases, such networks may not be available within a reachable distance from UC Riverside where you will be spending most of your time while attending school.

If you have verified that network coverage is available within the UC Riverside area, please be prepared to answer the questions on the next page. If you do not have the answers to the questions on the next page, you should contact your insurance company to collect all the information and complete the waiver worksheet prior to proceeding.

REMEMBER! You can submit the waiver ONE time ONLY. Once your waiver has been submitted, you will receive a "Waiver Approved" or "Waiver Denied" page based on the answers provided on the waiver form. You will NOT be able to access the waiver system again to make any corrections, so it is important that you have all of the correct information in advance of submitting the waiver.

If you are sure you want to waive SHIP, please have your health insurance policy information readily available and the completed waiver worksheet at hand.

Please note, minimum benefit standards represented in this waiver application may be revised for future waiver periods if health care legislation or university policy requires such a change.
